How do I get started?
Open AudioTamer from the menu bar, choose your output in setup, and turn on “Adjust this output.” Allow system audio access when macOS asks, then adjust the volume reduction. Open “EQ & Effects…” to shape the sound.
Why does macOS ask to record audio?
That permission lets AudioTamer access system audio so it can adjust the sound in real time. AudioTamer does not save recordings.
If you previously denied access, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording. Enable AudioTamer under System Audio Recording Only, follow any relaunch prompt, and try setup again.
What if I hear no sound?
Start with your Mac’s volume low. Check the selected output in macOS Sound settings and make sure it is connected. Try setup again. If you added an Audio Unit, bypass or remove it in “EQ & Effects…” and test again.
Turning AudioTamer off or quitting restores unprocessed audio, which may be louder.
Can I add my own Audio Unit effects?
Yes. Open “EQ & Effects…” and use the + button to add a compatible Audio Unit installed on your Mac. Drag effects to change their order, or use the toggles to bypass them. Effects run from top to bottom.
Each output remembers its own effect chain and settings. When you switch your Mac’s output, AudioTamer loads the chain you saved for that device. Compatibility varies by plug-in; some older Audio Units may not load in the app’s sandbox.
Does it work with every audio device?
AudioTamer adjusts the current system output. Compatibility with individual devices and third-party Audio Units varies. Some older Audio Units may not load in the app’s sandbox.
Is it a hearing-protection tool?
No. AudioTamer is a volume and EQ utility, not a safety limiter. Effects can increase the level, and turning processing off, quitting, or a processing failure can restore louder, unprocessed sound. Keep the underlying device volume at a comfortable level.
